One of the referees at the heart of a VAR storm during Manchester United’s win over Wolves at the beginning of the season will be in charge of Aston Villa’s trip to Burnley on Sunday.

The Red Devils beat Gary O’Neil’s side 1-0 at Old Trafford on Monday, August 14 but were fortunate not to concede a late penalty after United goalkeeper Andre Onana appeared to foul Wolves Sasa Kalajdzic in the host’s penalty area.

On-field referee Simon Hooper opted not to award a spot-kick and despite a lengthy VAR check by Michael Salisbury, the decision was not overturned, leading to public outrage amongst fans and pundits.

Both Hooper and Salisbury were stood down for the second round of Premier League fixtures last weekend in the wake of their apparent mistake at Old Trafford.

But Salisbury is now set to return as a fourth official for Man Utd vs Nottingham Forest on Saturday before refereeing Villa’s trip to the Clarets a day later.

Unai Emery’s side will be looking to pick up their first Premier League away win of the season after losing 5-1 at Newcastle in their opening game. They face a Burnley team who were beaten 3-0 in their first fixture of the new campaign and did not play last weekend after their game at Luton was postponed due to stadium works taking place at the Hatters’ ground.
