Rangers told to sign Martin Boyle, behind-the-scenes talks mooted already at Ibrox
Kenny Miller has urged Rangers to make a move for Hibernian forward Martin Boyle this summer.
The BBC Scotland pundit told the Daily Record on 13 August the Gers are still lacking a quick, wide player despite Michael Beale bringing in a new of new recruits in the transfer window.
The former Rangers striker believes signing the 30-year-old would add something different as the club look to challenge for the SPFL title this season.
“For me, Rangers should be looking at Martin Boyle from Hibs,” said Miller. “He would give Beale something he doesn’t have.
“Boyle can play in-field if necessary – he’s done that at Easter Road often enough playing off a striker. But crucially, he’s a danger out wide and commits defenders. He can beat players and puts opposition teams on the back foot.
“To do that, you need someone with pace, clever movement and good dribbling ability. And the player with those abilities in our league is Boyle. For the last few years, Rangers obviously had Ryan Kent.
“He’s a gifted, technical player but we all know his numbers weren’t good enough. Boyle might not be as technical as Kent. But one thing’s for sure – in the Premiership, he’s effective.
“So it’s an obvious option for Beale. Maybe his name has been mentioned already inside Ibrox. Because Boyle would add something new to his armoury.”
Shrewd business
This could potentially be a shrewd piece of business by Rangers if Boyle is a signing they are potentially looking at bringing in this summer.
Miller is right in pointing out that the forward is different to the other options Beale possesses in his armoury and you need to be able to mix things up if you want to compete for trophies.
While he isn’t a name that really springs out you, the Australian international has a decent record in the SPFL and brings a wealth of experience.
He’s scored 37 goals and laid on 29 assists during two spells with Hibernian in 160 appearances for the club, while also racking up a number of games in European competitions.
The winger would also probably be available for a relatively small fee due to his age, so this is certainly a signing that could be worth looking into if Beale wants to add something different to his side.
In other Rangers news, the Gers boss has responded to reports linking a player with a move away from the club.
