West Ham and Bournemouth coaches wanted to join Gary O’Neil’s Wolves management team

Wolverhampton Wanderers news from BirminghamLive as the club prepares for the appointment of Gary O’Neil as manager

Mark Robson and Tim Jenkins are among the coaches wanted to join Gary O’Neil in the new management team at Wolves.

O’Neil is set to be appointed Wolves boss, with an announcement possible today, as the club has moved quickly to replace Julen Lopetegui following his departure on Tuesday night. Lopetegui’s exit had been on the cards for some time, giving Wolves the chance to sound out potential replacements before settling on former Bournemouth manager O’Neil.

Jenkins, a former coach with Liverpool under 18s, joined Bournemouth in December 2022, joining O’Neil’s coaching staff following his appointment as permanent manager in the November. He had begun his career as an analyst at Derby County in 2001 and also worked at Forest Green Rovers before joining Liverpool in 2012. He was head of analysis in the academy before moving into more coaching work with the under-23s.

Mark Robson is under-21s lead coach at West Ham United. The former Hammers midfielder returned to the club in 2021 having been assistant manager at Peterborough United. He had previously worked in development football with the FA and been under-23s head coach at Norwich City and Charlton.

Lopetegui’s departure, along with his staff, has left vacancies with the new season less than a week away. Wolves play their opening fixture on Monday when they are away to Manchester United (8pm).

O’Neil got his first break as a manager last August when he took over at Bournemouth after Scott Parker was sacked four games into the new season. The 40 year old defied expectations by leading the Cherries to safety and a 15th -placed finish. However, he lost his job in June when the club appointed Andoni Iraola.

Is Gary O’Neil a good appointment for Wolves?
