According to The Athletic journalist, taking to his personal Twitter account (15 August), Downes could be set to make his debut for the Saints on Saturday 19 August against Plymouth Argyle.

Sky Sports reported on Tuesday 15 August that Downes’ impending medical had stalled due to illness but it appears as though his medical will take place tomorrow ahead of his loan move following the likes of Declan Rice, Gianluca Scamacca and Manuel Lanzini out the exit door.

Thomas tweeted: “Flynn Downes is set to have his medical at Southampton tomorrow ahead of season-long loan move. Midfielder could make his debut against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.”

Needs games

The 24-year-old Hammers fan made 21 appearances during the 2022/23 season after his £12m move from Swansea City, however, only a handful of them were from the outset.

He certainly would have expected more game-time after making such a big-money move to the London Stadium last summer and it is certainly looking like a failed move for both parties at present.

It was made clear last season when he did start that wasn’t up to the required level for David Moyes.

With Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse coming through the London Stadium doors as replacements for Declan Rice, Downes’ game time at the club will have been severely limited just like last season.

The former Swansea City man desperately needs games this season and he’d certainly be able to get back to his best self under Russell Martin at St Mary’s.
