Horrible Celtic luck after new contract; Stephen Welsh injury scan results revealed
Celtic defender Stephen Welsh is facing at least two months out of action after suffering an injury in training just hours after signing his new contract at the Bhoys.
Brendan Rodgers revealed that he had picked up an issue at Lennoxtown in a media conference yesterday, described as a ‘knock’ by the Celtic boss. But the issue is more serious than that.
The Daily Record reports that Welsh was sent for a scan which has revealed ankle ligament damage that will keep the Academy graduate out for at least eight weeks, which is a bitter personal blow to the player.
Welsh was brimming with confidence in interviews after signing his new deal and sounded excited to be a firm part of Rodgers’ plans.
The manager had indicated Welsh was included in his four-man line-up for the central defensive position at the Bhoys, but the 23-year-old will have to put his season on hold.
Celtic are now relying on Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke to build a solid partnership at the back over the coming weeks, with Cameron Carter-Vickers also on the sidelines with a hamstring problem.
Rodgers has at least indicated that Carter-Vickers will not be out for the long-term, but it’s still a tricky few weeks for Celtic and these injury blows are far from ideal.
The Bhoys also have Liam Scales available, and Yuki Kobayashi is officially part of the squad although has barely featured since Rodgers’ arrival.
It’s doubtful Celtic will enter the market for another defender, with other areas needing to be addressed, so Rodgers and the squad will have to make do. Everyone is hoping the new Bhoys are up to the task!
