Sean Dyche has confirmed striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin will return to the matchday squad against Aston Villa – but does not expect Demarai Gray to be fit.

The Toffees boss said the ex-Blues winger is continuing to work toward match fitness and is not likely to be ready in time for his return to Birmingham. He missed the first game of the season against Fulham and did not play in any of the pre-season after spending the summer with Jamaica.

Gray’s absence comes as he remains the subject of interest from sides across the Premier League and elsewhere.

Asked by sister title Liverpool Echo whether Gray could feature on Sunday, Dyche explained: “He is just coming back, he needs to be fully fit.”

However, Dyche was more confident about Calvert-Lewin: “On his side, he’s in good shape. He managed to get the end part of his rehab done with 90 minutes and is in good shape and certainly comes into the subject of thinking.”

The manager also confirmed Arnaut Danjuma and Vitalii Mykolenko will miss out as the pair have “still got a bit to do.” He added: “A lot of them got 90 minutes in the week, which was plenty.

“I think Andre [Gomes] has a tightness in his calf so we’ve got to be careful with that because he’s going back to full fitness. We’re just trying to get the fitness base right for a few of them really but they’re getting closer to what you’d call true fitness.”

Elsewhere, loan signing Jack Harrison, who was a target for Villa, will miss out as he recovers from a hip injury. Seamus Coleman is still recovering from a long-term knee injury and Dele Alli is also returning to fitness from a hip operation.
