The latest Man City transfer news following Saturday’s win over Newcastle United

Manchester City came through their first home outing of the Premier League season with all three points thanks to a narrow win over Newcastle United on Saturday night.

Eddie Howe’s side enjoyed an impressive start to the campaign as they beat Aston Villa 5-1 in their opening fixture while City had won 3-0 at Burnley. And it was City who maintained their 100 per cent start thanks to Julian Alvarez’s first-half goal.

Pep Guardiola’s side has a slightly new look to the one which won the treble last time out with the likes of Ilkay Gündogan and Riyad Mahrez moving on while Josko Gvardio and Mateo Kovacic have signed for the club.

More ins and outs could happen at the Etihad Stadium before the window shuts at 11pm and we have rounded up the latest news from City below.

Liverpool ‘consider’ Phillips move

Liverpool are considering a surprise move for City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to talkSPORT. The ex-Leeds United man is very much on the fringes at City but has previously stated his intent to fight for his place at the club.

However, it is claimed the Reds have added the player to their shortlist of targets and are ready to test the midfielder’s resolve. This comes amid reports City are open to loaning out Phillips to increase his game time. He has yet to play for the club this season despite being in the matchday squads for both Premier League games as well being named on the bench for the Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup.

The Reds are actively looking to strengthen their midfield after missing out on moves for Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, with Wataru Endō joining the club from Stuttgart last week.

Barcelona hope to complete a deal for City defender Joao Cancelo this week with a breakthrough in talks expected soon, according to Fabrizio Romano. The player spent the second half of last season on loan at Bayern Munich but returned to England after the Bundesliga champions declined to keep the player permanently.

Cancelo has already agreed terms with Barca over a proposed move and is said to be keen to make the switch to the La Liga club. He joined City from Juventus in 2019. His move to Spain is set to be a loan before an option to buy next summer.

‘Agreed with Liverpool’: £20m midfielder has told Man United he wants to sign for Liverpool – journalist

Liverpool need more midfield signings, but they may have to wait until January to get another player through the door.

Indeed, all summer long we’ve been hearing stories about Liverpool and Andre Trindade, but, as has been reported, Fluminense don’t want to sell until January so that they can finish their season with Andre in the middle of the park.

According to Brazilian reporter, Emmanuel Luiz, Liverpool have told Fluminense that they will speak to them about this deal straight after the window closes, while the player’s camp have been saying that a deal has been agreed.

Speaking to RedMenTV, Luiz claimed that Andre’s camp have even told Manchester United that a deal has been agreed with the Reds.

Luiz shared what he knows about Andre.

“What did Fluminense tell Liverpool? They said in January €25m (£20m), ok? That’s what they said to Liverpool. What Liverpool said this is exclusive information for you guys. Liverpool said they would talk with Fluminense after the window closed right now just to get the deal done, done deal. Right? Andre wants the Liverpool move. Manchester United was in talks with the player’s camp, they said look, in England, we agreed with Liverpool. I love Andre, but I never trust a player’s word, but in this case I think it’s a very strong situation,” Luiz said.

We’re not ones for short-termism, but we can’t help but feel that waiting until January to sign Andre could be a mistake.

There’s so much football to be played between now and January, and if Liverpool don’t sort their midfield out until the winter window, they could already be out of the title race or even the top four race.

Of course, good things come to those who wait, but after offering £111m for Moises Caicedo two weeks ago, surely there’s enough money in the bank to do this deal in January and another one before next week’s deadline.

One thing is for sure, Andre is a player worth keeping an eye on from a Liverpool perspective.
