Latest Nottingham Forest transfer news as the Reds reportedly receive an offer for midfielder Remo Freuler

Nottingham Forest have received a bid from Bologna for midfielder Remo Freuler, according to a report.

The 31-year-old joined Forest from Serie A club Atalanta last season, and could now be set for a return to the top flight of Italian football amid interest from Bologna.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Bologna have submitted an official offer for the midfielder. If accepted, it would see them take Freuler on loan and hold an option to buy him at a later date.

Italian outlet Il Corriere di Bologna corroborate the report and add that Forest want Nicolas Dominguez as part of the deal, with the Argentine being heavily linked to Forest in recent days.

Bologna director Giovanni Sartori worked with Freuler at Atalanta so will know the player well. Freuler has been linked with a return to Italy sporadically since he arrived at the City Ground, although Atalanta was the main focus of that perhaps wishful speculation.

Freuler made 28 appearances in the Premier League for Forest last season. His wife has previously hinted on Instagram at a return to Atalanta after receiving unwarranted stick aimed at her and her husband on social media.

Argentina midfielder Nicolas Dominguez could be heading to Forest in the opposite direction as head coach Steve Cooper looks to bolster his options in that area of the pitch. It has been reported in recent days that a deal for Dominguez is ‘close’.

Goalkeeper has no plans for Nottingham Forest transfer – ‘Immediately cleared’ head after offers were rejected

Nottingham Forest 'fear Steve Cooper could leave' as Premier League giants eye coach | Football | Sport | Express.co.uk

It’s been a while since the links between Nottingham Forest and Braga goalkeeper disappeared, but that story was last night brought back by the Portuguese media.

Following the Champions League clash against Panathinaikos, the 31-year-old had a word with the local press, and as relayed by Record, he ended up getting asked about the Tricky Trees’ interest.

The goalkeeper made it clear that a move to Nottingham Forest does not cross his mind at his stage, as he’s completely focused on doing a good season with Braga.

“When the president said he didn’t want me to leave, I immediately cleared my head,” said Matheus.

“I want to contribute and help this club to make history. I’ve been dedicating myself to the maximum to make history, because that’s what remains, the legacy, and fortunately I’ve been able to leave that mark. Is it true that I stay? Yes, yes, it is my will and that of the president.”

The links between Nottingham Forest and Matheus started in June, when it was first claimed that the Reds had placed a €4.5m offer for the goalkeeper.

With the Premier League side claimed to have an ‘immense desire’ to sign him, it was even said that bid was then raised to €10m, and that was still not enough to convince Braga.

The offer was said to be tempting enough to attract Matheus, but with the club not willing to sell, it seems he didn’t want to force his way out.

THE DEBATE: WHAT CHANGES SHOULD ERIK MAKE FOR FOREST?

Manchester United will go in pursuit of getting back to winning ways in the Premier League on Saturday, when Nottingham Forest are the visitors to Old Trafford for a 15:00 BST kick-off.

The Reds were on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline away to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, and currently have three points from a possible six in the league in 2023/24, having beaten Wolves in the opening round of fixtures, before that trip to the capital to face Spurs.

Erik ten Hag’s team will be without injured midfielder Mason Mount – who started at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – meaning there will be at least one change to the XI for our upcoming clash with Forest.

So, who will come in for Mount? Our panellists on a brand-new episode of The Debate were unanimous in their thinking that Mason’s absence could see Christian Eriksen picked to start.

HOW DO UNITED BOUNCE BACK?

“With Mount being out, I think Eriksen has to come in,” said Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst.
“He was excellent at Forest in April, and this is going to be a game that United will have at least 60 per cent of the ball. I think Arsenal had 79 per cent against Forest in their first game of the season and so Eriksen is completely suited to that.

“They’ve got to be attack-minded and he’s an attacking change.”

Also joining Luckhurst and host Liam Bradford on this week’s episode were football writer James Ducker, plus former Reds Siobhan Chamberlain and Danny Webber.

Answering the question about possible changes first among our guests, Luckhurst also suggested a second alteration that he would make to our XI this weekend, that would see Jadon Sancho come in to play up front, with Alejandro Garnacho instead tasked with making an impact from the bench.

That notion was something Chamberlain, Ducker and Webber agreed with, because it would allow Marcus Rashford to play in his favoured left-wing position, instead of leading the line centrally like he did against Wolves and Spurs.

“You’d rather have him [Rashford] somewhere he wants to play and then someone else centrally who maybe isn’t as natural there, but you’ve still got one of your starters, one of your key players, where he wants to be,” former United Women goalkeeper Chamberlain explained.

MOUNT PICKS UP INJURY

Former Academy graduate Webber added: “I’d agree with Sancho and Eriksen coming in.”

“What I think is that if you start making wholesale changes, then you don’t allow your players to get into a rhythm and allow them to amend the mistakes they’ve been making in previous games.

“So, for me, it’s not about wholesale changes. The obvious one is Marcus going out to the left, Jadon coming in and, with Mason Mount out, bringing in Christian Eriksen.”
