Tottenham, Newcastle stun Liverpool with approach for £30m winger; Burnley have had a bid rejected

Liverpool 'set sights' on €10m 'gem' who is 'promising card' to replace Saudi-linked Klopp favourite

Tottenham and Newcastle United have joined Liverpool in the race to sign PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko, according to reports.

The 20-year-old has put in some fine performances for the Dutch giants recently and is being targeted by a host of European clubs.

Bakayoko is only expected to improve as he gains experience, so could prove to be an excellent long-term investment for whoever wins the battle for his signature.

The skilful winger impressed for Jong PSV in the 2021/22 campaign, when he scored 17 goals and made 12 assists in 32 league appearances.

Bakayoko then broke into the PSV first team last season and has since made 41 appearances in all competitions, netting seven goals and making seven assists.

As mentioned, many European clubs are chasing the Belgium international. Burnley are believed to have had a bid rejected for Bakayoko, while Liverpool have emerged as contenders to sign him.

With Tottenham and Newcastle now entering the race, we could potentially see a bidding war take place in the final few days of the transfer window.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Tottenham and Newcastle are making ‘checks’ on Bakayoko as they consider making a ‘last-minute’ bid for him.

Both clubs reportedly sent scouts to watch Bakayoko in action against Rangers at Ibrox on Tuesday. The match finished 2-2, with the Belgian putting in an excellent performance and making two assists.

Bakayoko has already provided four assists in six appearances so far this season, which proves he is an excellent creator of chances for PSV.

As per Nixon’s report, the interest from Tottenham and Newcastle is said to be ‘genuine,’ and there is a good chance at least one of the duo will make a bid before deadline day.

As mentioned, Burnley have already seen an offer turned down. The amount they put down is believed to be around £17.2m.

It’s also worth noting that his contract with the Dutch club is valid until 2026, so PSV are under no immediate pressure to sell him.

This means that Tottenham, Newcastle or indeed Liverpool would have to make a significantly higher offer than £17.2m to have any chance of signing Bakayoko this summer. Reports suggest £30m could be enough to secure his services.

Given the level of interest from the Premier League, though, Bakayoko is definitely a player to keep an eye on as the transfer window draws to a close.
