Tottenham set to beat Chelsea to £50m transfer as Mauricio Pochettino faces deadline day dilemma
Chelsea are facing a race against time to finalise Mauricio Pochettino’s squad for the 2023/24 campaign with Tottenham looking to sign Brennan Johnson ahead of the Blues
Tottenham are set to beat Chelsea to the signing of Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson before the summer transfer window closes. The Blues are looking to sign a versatile forward after Mauricio Pochettino made it clear he wants to bolster his attack before deadline day.
Nicolas Jackson has become the focal point in attack at Stamford Bridge after completing a £30million move to Chelsea from Villarreal earlier this summer. Christopher Nkunku suffered a serious knee injury during pre-season and is set to be sidelined for a number of weeks.
Raheem Sterling looks back to his best in a new role under Pochettino, but the Chelsea boss still wants another option to help support his attack. Brennan Johnson emerged as a target for the Blues but Spurs are stepping up their pursuit of the Nottingham Forest star.
Spurs are expected to submit a £50million bid to sign Johnson this week, according to The Telegraph. Tottenham could offer cash plus players, with centre-half Davinson Sanchez and winger Bryan Gil likely to be two players who could be part of any deal.
This has left Pochettino with a dilemma heading into the final week of the transfer window. Chelsea were unsuccessful in securing a deal to sign Crystal Palace star Michael Olise earlier this month – with the Frenchman signing a new contract at Selhurst Park after talks broke down.
Rayan Cherki looks set to stay at Lyon this season with reports suggesting the Blues had concerns over the 20-year-old’s attitude. Bradley Barcola has been linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge, but Paris Saint-Germain remain favourites to sign the talented youngster.
Johnson is said to prefer a move to Spurs leaving Chelsea short of options in the transfer market to bolster Pochettino’s squad. The Argentine made the decision not to pursue a permanent deal to sign Joao Felix after his short-term loan spell at Stamford Bridge last season.
As deadline day rapidly approaches, new players are likely to emerge as targets for the Blues after Pochettino made his demands clear to Todd Boehly and Co. Romelu Lukaku is edging closer to securing a loan move to Roma this season which will reduce Chelsea’s options in attack further.
