‘Rejected’: Fabrizio Romano says Wolves have failed with first bid for 28y/o, set to make improved offer

Wolves have today made a bid for Harrison Reed – and Fulham have rejected it.

Wolves have already confirmed one incoming today, with Enso Gonzalez joining the club from Club Libertad.

But the club will not be stopping there.

Tommy Doyle is joining the club on loan from Manchester City.

And centre-back Santi Bueno is also coming in from Girona.

Wolves are looking to land another midfielder in addition to Doyle – and the club’s search has now led them to Fulham star Reed.

Wolves fail with first Harrison Reed bid, another bid expected

According to Fabrizio Romano, Wolves have seen their first bid for Reed rejected today.

The Cottagers turned down the offer ‘in the last few hours’.

Romano reports that the club are expected to put in a further bid ‘very soon’.

Reed has been with Fulham since 2020, joining from Southampton.

He has clocked up 149 appearances for the club, scoring three goals and making 11 assists.

It is unclear how much Wolves’ first bid was worth.

Reed interest comes out of the blue, but he could be a great pick up

Wolves’ interest in Reed has rather come out of nowhere.

On the face of it, it is a little underwhelming.

But Reed is a tidy midfield player with a lot of Premier League experience. He tends to be more comfortable playing as a deep-lying midfielder, but can play further up is needs be.

Wolves have a relatively young pool of midfield options and it could be good to have someone like Reed, 28, come in.

Since he only has one year left at Fulham, he surely isn’t going to break the bank.

Wolves boss Gary O’Neil says Matheus Nunes’ transfer to Manchester City will help strengthen the Molineux squad as a whole as the club works on deals before Friday night’s transfer window.

The midfielder’s £53million transfer to the champions is set to be confirmed, subject to a medical. Wolves are bringing in 21 year old midfielder Tommy Doyle on a season long loan from City with a view to a £4.3m permanent move.

The club have also recruited Paraguayan winger Enso Gonzalez and are expected to complete a move for Girona central defender Santiago Bueno. Further deals before Friday’s 11pm deadline are possible and Wolves have made a tentative inquiry about Fulham midfielder Harrison Reed.

Asked if he was happy with the Nunes deal, the manager said: “Overall, once everything goes through, including players coming the other way and some of the add-ons, the valuation is around where the cub would have expected it to be. So, we are fairly happy with where it has got to. It gives us the opportunity to strengthen the group.”

The Doyle deal is separate to the Nunes arrangement but means Wolves have been quickly able to bolster their midfield following the Portugal international’s departure.

Doyle has come through the academy at City, is an England under-21 international and had loans at Hamburg and Cardiff before spending last season with Sheffield United, helping them win automatic promotion to the Championship.

O’Neil added: “He had a really good season last year at Sheffield United. He is a talented boy, well educated football wise coming through the academy at Manchester City. He will be good to help us with the structure and how we try to play.,

“We have been a little bit short, especially with the injury to Joe Hodge in the week, a little bit short in central midfield. So it gives us another number in there and brings some quality a little bit different to maybe what quality we have had in there for the last few weeks.

“So, competition for places is key and adding quality and someone we think is going to be able to affect games at this level for now and also for the future.”

Gonzalez, aged 18, has signed a six year deal with the option for another year after Wolves agreed a fee with Paraguayan top flight side Libertad.

O’Neil added: “Enso is a talent, very young, has come though from South America so there will be some adaptation needed of course. He has had a long couple of days as well so we will need to bed him in and help him with the transition to living in a new place with a new group and getting used to a very different league as well to what he has been playing in. But I am sure he can give us something this year and impact how productive we can be in the final third.”

As for the possibility of more signings, the manager said: “I don’t want to give away too much but there are a few areas we can still strengthen between now and the close of the window. There are no other names that I will confirm or not. I am happy to talk about the ones we have done and happy to conform we are still trying to do some more.”

Nunes stopped training with Wolves having said he wanted to go to Manchester City. O’Neil said he wouldn’t have done the same as a player but was philosophical about the situation.

He added: “I think the situation is resolved, or all but resolved, because he is signing for Manchester City. Had he rejoined the group I would have told him how I felt around the situation. But as far as I am aware it is basically done so there is no need for me to comment about what I think of Matheus Nunes or the way the last week went.

“Whenever I dealt with him before the situation came up, he was a great lad, worked hard and wanted to do his best for the team and the club. Then obviously a big club come calling and you understand players like to play for Manchester City.

“Would I have dealt with it the same way? I wouldn’t but I would rather save those conversations for Matheus and myself to have privately.

“But we move on and hopefully look forward to hopefully some more additions and a big game at the weekend.”

Wolves return to Premier League action on Sunday when they are away to Crystal Palace. O’Neil’s side have had a productive week, winning 1-0 at Everton in the league on Saturday before seeing off Blackpool 5-0 in the EFL Cup at Molineux on Tuesday.
