Ipswich Town went into the September international break with a 3-2 win against Cardiff City, having been 2-0 down shortly after half-time. Alex Jones provides his player ratings for the Blues.

Vaclav Hladky

Made an astonishing save to deny Dimitrios Goutas in the first half, but couldn’t do too much about Aaron Ramsey’s goal. He didn’t have a great view of Cardiff’s second, but would’ve struggled to have kept out Joe Ralls’ low strike. Did incredibly well to deny Karlan Grant and Ike Ugbo in the second half. Easily could’ve been Man of the Match, as the Bluebirds would’ve been out of sight without him. 8

Harry Clarke

Struggled in the first half. Cardiff’s opener came from his side, and he had a tough time stopping crosses in general. As Town improved after the break, he did too, looking a lot more solid. These minutes will be vital for him to reach full fitness – I don’t think he’s quite there yet. 6

Luke Woolfenden

Looked really frustrated with himself for Cardiff’s second goal. They put him under a lot of pressure and he didn’t handle it overly well. Needed to do more in the box and to cover Clarke. Looked good in possession when Ipswich needed to slow the game down. 6

Cameron Burgess

Perhaps should’ve anticipated Ramsey’s run better for the opener, but he threw himself about. Used his physicality well in a gritty game, then slowed things down when the Blues needed to hold on, completing the most passes in the game. 7

Leif Davis

Wasn’t involved as much as he would’ve liked in terms of his output going forward, but he got stuck in. Put in some strong tackles and made it hard for Cardiff to attack down Ipswich’s left. 7

Sam Morsy

Found it hard in the first half, like most of his teammates did, but his aggression and tenacity were vital in helping Ipswich get back into the game. Provided the assist for Nathan Broadhead’s strike. Battled hard in a game that really needed it. 7

Massimo Luongo

Similar to Morsy against Leeds, his presence wasn’t quite there. He gave the ball away more than anyone else on the pitch (11 times) and didn’t really have the space to unlock Cardiff’s team and move Town up the pitch. Had a good moment as Town pushed forward late in the first half, but not a great deal after that. 5

Wes Burns

Cardiff gave him no space to work with in the final third, which he really found hard, especially in the first half. He was fouled three times in quick succession before the equaliser, however, helping Town to move up the line and into the final third. Worked hard. 6

Conor Chaplin

Really should’ve equalised shortly before the break in one of Town’s few concrete first-half opportunities. He was marked within an inch of his life but still managed to find space, even if his finishing wasn’t quite there. 6

Nathan Broadhead

Had a quiet first half, but showed signs of life after the break, taking on Cardiff’s back line and showing his immense quality. A wayward free-kick shortly before the hour-mark clearly woke him up, leading to him rifling a stunning effort into the roof of the net from distance. He struggles to always maintain his high standards, but he’s always capable of dragging Town by the scruff of their neck when he needs to. 8

George Hirst

Had a glorious chance to equalise for Town before hobbling off in the 37th minute. Didn’t have the service to do much more than that during his time on the pitch. A frustrating return for him. 5

Sub: Freddie Ladapo (37′)

Knew he had a point to prove after all the rumours on deadline day. Came close with a good effort shortly after coming on and almost set up Chaplin for an equaliser a few seconds later. He didn’t know too much about his winning goal, but bagging a brace off the bench is quite an accomplishment. 8 (MotM)

Sub: Jack Taylor (75′)

Full of energy. He was exactly what Town needed in the latter stages, pressing Cardiff into surrendering possession as they searched for an equaliser. He’s knocking on the door to start. 7

Sub: Omari Hutchinson (75′)

A relatively quiet game after his assist, which was to be expected. Took his man on with such confidence and put in a fantastic cross for the assist, even if it needed a mistake from Runar Alex Runarsson to go in. 7

Sub: Brandon Williams (75′)

Didn’t have to do much. Generally solid and looked more confident than he did in his previous appearances, playing a lovely pass forward for Hutchinson’s assist. 7

Sub: Lee Evans (90′)
