‘Difficult’: Gary O’Neil offers classy response when asked if he sympathised with Matheus Nunes
Gary O’Neil has been speaking about the last hours of the transfer market at Wolves – and responded when asked if he sympathised with Matheus Nunes being targeted by Manchester City.
Wanderers had a rather frantic end to the transfer window.
In the end, four new players came in in the final two days.
Santiago Bueno and Enso Gonzalez arrived on the Thursday.
And then on deadline day, Tommy Doyle and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde came in.
These deals were made possible by the sale of Matheus Nunes, who was widely criticised for going on strike to force his move.
Nunes sealed his move on deadline day, and O’Neil has now spoken in a bit more detail about the midfielder and how he acted…
Gary O’Neil gives classy response when asked about Matheus Nunes’ exit from Wolves
O’Neil has given an exclusive interview to talkSPORT about the final couple of days of the transfer window.
Nunes leaving was not something Wolves planned for.
But the club had to react to the pursuit from City, and saw an opportunity to get a handful of players in with the money from his sale.
Many were stunned by Nunes going on strike, and O’Neil was asked by talkSPORT’s Alex Crook if he had any sympathy for the player, who clearly wanted the move.
O’Neil said: “It’s difficult for me to talk about now because Matheus is obviously at Manchester City. I don’t want to talk too much about Manchester City’s players. That wouldn’t have been how I chose to handle it.
“I know players nowadays have a lot of people advising them on how best to do things. As a club, we were always really clear on how the process would go. We had a valuation for Matheus. We also had things we needed to try and get in place to make sure we could replace him within the next few days. So that the offer we received, if it had got to the level we were happy with, we were always going to give Matheus our blessing and allow him to move on.
“But the way the player behaves in that situation doesn’t change that. It doesn’t bring the price down, it doesn’t make us more keen to do it or not do it. There’s a lot of things that go into a player moving clubs, especially at that time in the window. It’s not how I would have chosen to do it.
“But before that time with Matheus… a very talented boy. Good kid, works his socks off every single day for us. Hopefully the move goes well for him.”
Classy response from O’Neil
You can tell that O’Neil is really disappointed with Nunes’ behaviour.
But the manager is keen to offer the positives from the situation, and has wished Nunes – who posted a cryptic statement about his departure recently – well in spite of his antics, which shows class.
Ultimately, Wolves have been able to bring in a handful of talented players from Nunes’ sale.
And the club have gotten rid of a player that had had his head turned.
