‘Excting, quick and sharp’ – What Michael Carrick said about Middlesbrough’s summer transfers
Here’s what the Boro boss has had to say about the new faces they have brought to the squad in the summer transfer
It’s been a busy summer when it comes to transfers at Middlesbrough, with 12 players joining the Boro first-team squad. Michael Carrick and Co have had to work had to replace the outgoing players – now comes the job of moulding them into a winning unit.
Results have not gone to plan for Boro yet, but there is confidence from the coaching staff that better times are around the corner. Certainly they need to get some positive results against Blackburn and Sheffield Wednesday when the Championship season resumes following the international break.
Carrick has declared himself pleased with the club’s summer business and feels Boro now have the squad capable of adapting to different challenges. Here’s what he said about the key signings so far.
Emmanuel Latte Lath
“He’s got also plenty of experience from playing in Italy and Switzerland. He’s exciting, quick, looks very sharp and can make things happen. I’m Iooking forward to getting both players settled in with the group, and delighted to have them both.”
Lukas Engel
“Lukas is a good age, he’s already gained experience to a point and looking to make the next step in his career,” said Carrick following confirmation of the deal. He’s desperate to do well and you can tell he’s very happy to be here. I’m looking forward to working with him.”
Tom Glover
“Tom’s come around the world to get here! We’re delighted to have him. He’s a terrific goalkeeper and he was at Spurs as a young lad but went back to Australia to play games and develop that way. He’s at that stage of his career now where he wants to take the next step and I think shows who he is and his attitude really. Straight away that shone through.
“He was desperate to get here. He flew into England from Australia to do all his medicals and ticking things off, and was then desperate to get straight out here. I asked him how he was, was he tired? He didn’t even flinch, no jet lag, nothing, he just said, ‘I’m ready to go’. So full credit to him for that.
Alex Gilbert
“Alex is actually someone Danksy (Boro coach Aaron Danks) knew – he knows everybody Danksy! But he was around the West Brom youth system for some time so he knows Alex from there. Alex then went to Brentford and did really well there.
“He’s someone who can play between the lines, plays really good football, solid with both feet, scores goals. He’s very good to watch and is a talent with a lot of potential. I’m really excited to see how he can improve and develop with us.”
Morgan Rogers
“Morgan is someone who has a lot of Championship experience already. Those experiences have been varied, which isn’t a bad thing for such a young lad. Again, he’s at an age where he wants to kick on and he’s desperate to prove himself. He’s another player that Danksy knew from West Brom.
“He’s a good size, technically very good, athletic, and the kind of player who can cause teams all sorts of problems. We’re delighted to have him and we’re here to coach and develop them all, push them on to try and create that winning team.”
Alex Bangura
“He’s a really exciting signing. He’s a left-back and he’s captained his team. He’s a good character with a great personality and he won’t have any problem fitting into the group.”
Rav van den Berg
“We’re delighted to have Rav. Again, a player with big talent and big potential. He’s already played a lot of games for somebody of his age. He can play two or three different positions. He certainly seems and acts and behaves, and plays, a lot older than his age suggests.
“We’re absolutely delighted to have him. There was quite a number of clubs in for him, and big interest in him, but we hit it off, we gelled and I think we see football the same way. So we’re looking forward to working together, and we’ll try and help him become as good as he possibly can be.”
Sam Silvera
“Sam’s coming from Australia to push himself and try and make a career. We hope he can be a big part of what we do here. We’re delighted.”
Lewis O’Brien
“I think Lewis is a very good footballer and has gained very good experience of success at this level as well. He knows what it takes in this league. He gives us good variety and is a little bit different to what we’ve got. But at the same time, we feel that he will be able to fit in quite quickly.
“He’s a really good, humble and hard-working lad who is desperate to do well. We talk about the player and what he can bring [on the pitch] but actually the person themselves and fitting into the group is what we class as being vital. He certainly ticks all of the boxes.”
Sam Greenwood
“Sam is a really exciting talent. I say talent in the best possible way because I think he’s got huge potential. He’s creative and strong with both feet, so we’ll certainly be looking to get the best out of him in those attacking areas. We want him to be positive and show the threat that he can have.
“We’re excited to help him with that next stage of his development. Similar to Lewis, he’s a great lad who is desperate and delighted to be here. He’s from the North East as well, so he knows what it’s all about. Again, he’s a really good fit on and off the pitch.
“I’ve touched on previously that we have good variety and flexibility in the forward areas and Sam adds to that. He can also bring in a little something different. You don’t want someone dramatically different when you have to fit them into your way of playing, but what you do want is skills and attributes that fit within the structure.”
