Report: QPR have zero regret on Coventry City transfer
Godden would be a great player to have on board at Loftus Road – but according to a recent interview, he wouldn’t want to leave the CBS Arena.
Godden would be an excellent player to have at Loftus Road – but according to his recent interview, he wouldn’t want to leave the CBS Arena. This was no surprise as he was entering his final year at Coventry Building Society, and the R’s may have seen a chance to sign him on a relatively cheap deal. Gareth Ainsworth’s side had been crying out for a striker all summer, and while they had Paul Smyth, Taylor Richards and others who can play in the last third, they hadn’t got the striker or two they needed. Now they’ll have to rely on the free agent market up until January, and while there are some good options out there, such as Lyle Taylor, they may take a while to get back to fitness..
Re-signing a striker ahead of the international break would have been a stroke of genius – but they missed that chance with their next match coming up on Saturday. While Ainsworth’s side haven’t made a bad start to the season, all things being equal, it’s likely that depth will separate those who manage to secure a top-half finish from those who flounder into the relegation zone. It’s fair to say that an improvement on last season’s ninth-place finish would probably be do-able for QPR, given how shambolic they were in the latter half of last season – but they may be able to only keep themselves afloat by bringing in another striker or two.
Would Matt Godden have made a good impact on QPR?
Given his size and build, Godden is likely to prefer to play in a front two, which is not ideal for QPR, who may sometimes prefer to play with one up top. But, at this level, Godden is a goalscorer and, despite a poor afternoon on the Sky Blues’ opening day against Leicester City, has scored four goals in five games so far this season. He was getting into good positions against Leicester, but could not find the net despite a couple of good chances at the King Power. Having the ability to get into good positions and score goals would be invaluable at Loftus Road, and his experience will also be useful. Bringing a winning attitude to the dressing room would also be beneficial, given how much QPR collapsed last season..
Should QPR regret not signing Matt Godden?
At the moment, Coventry is a more appealing project than QPR considering the former seem to be on the up, even after losing their play-off final against Luton Town in May.
And with Godden already spending more than four years at the Coventry Building Society Arena, it came as no surprise when he put pen to paper on a deal last month to extend his stay until 2025.
The forward may have only had a year or so left on his deal for much of the campaign – but he has won a decent number of minutes this term and has seemingly always been a key part of Mark Robins’ plans despite the signings of Ellis Simms and Haji Wright.
With this in mind, it would have been difficult to have seen the Sky Blues selling Godden and they arguably needed him following Viktor Gyokeres’ departure.
And judging by Godden’s comments to Coventry Live, leaving never seemed to be an option he contemplated, saying: “I’m very settled. I love the place.
“The club has done a lot for me and I feel I have given it a lot as well. It’s part of me and has been an important part of my journey, so I am very happy to be here.
“The reason why I joined was to go on a journey and see how far we could get, and at the moment it is going very well and hopefully we can get to the top.”
With these comments in mind, it would have been hard to have seen him depart for Loftus Road during the summer, even when he hadn’t signed a new contract.
It’s just a shame that the R’s couldn’t get a deal over the line for another forward target.
