A second Barnsley player heads out on loan to a National League club in space of 24 hours

BARNSLEY summer signing Kyran Lofthouse has joined National League outfit Gateshead on loan.
Barnsley FC transfer news: League One side complete the signing of former Woking defender Kyran Lofthouse

Lofthouse’s move follows on from the departure of striker Aiden Marsh to York City, for an initial month.

Lofthouse, who joined the club from Woking, will stay in the north-east until January 2024, subject to league and FA approval.

The defender signed on a three-year deal in late July, with option of a further year in their favour.

The 22-year-old made 103 appearances in his time with Woking, having started his career at hometown club Oxford United. He has also played for Oxford City on loan.

Lofthouse had made three appearances across three separate competitions for the Reds so far this term.

He is the second close-season arrival at Oakwell who has been allowed to head out on loan – despite only recently joining.

Andy Dallas, who joined Barnsley on a three-year deal, moved to SPL side Kilmarnock on a season-long loan at the end of the summer window – having only signed for the Oakwell outfit just over a month earlier.

Fellow striker Oli Shaw, who signed for the Reds on the final day of the winter window in January, moved to another Scottish side Motherwell in a similar loan arrangement.

View from the opposition: Northampton V Barnsley

This Saturday sees Barnsley visit Northampton Town in League One. The Cobblers currently sit in 19th place with 7 points from 7 games winning twice, drawing once and losing four games. Barnsley dropped to 6th place on 13 points from 8 games after the 2-3 home defeat to Portsmouth in midweek.

We asked Charles from the Cobblers to Me podcast for his thoughts ahead of the game.

How would you rate your summer transfer window?

While Jon Brady tried to get someone in on transfer deadline day to boost our attack, nothing was forthcoming. The rest of the transfer window was spent bolstering our defensive options. Both Manny Monthé and Patrick Brough came in to ensure we had options if we faced another injury crisis this year. The rest of our signings have been on loan. Both Kieron Bowie and Marc Leonard have returned for 2nd seasons from their parent clubs and Tyreece Simpson has joined for the season.

How has your season started?

So far our season has been ok. Every Cobblers fan would have put our ambitions at just staying up this year and so far we’re doing just enough to stay away from the bottom four. What’s been more impressive is others’ transition of our playing style. We’re a lot more possession based this year, patiently keeping the ball and working the opposition to create the space that will provide us an opportunity to attack.

Having said that, it is our attack that has let us down this season. It’s not that we’re not creating chances though. Our main weakness is finding the back of the net.

We are pretty strong at the other end of the pitch though and it takes a really good goal (usually) to get past us.

Give us your thoughts on Saturday’s game

I am worried about this game though. Barnsley are a good side at this level and we could be in for a long afternoon.

And what about a score prediction

I’ll go with a 1-1 draw.
