CELTIC fans groups chose to stay outside the stadium while a minute’s silence for remembrance weekend was observed.

Pictures taken at Celtic Park ahead of today’s clash with Motherwell fc show the bottom part of the singing section, which usually houses the Green Brigade, deserted as the silence took place.

That came after another Hoops fans’ grouping called ‘The Bhoys’ outlined their plans to give the gesture the cold shoulder.

They said they would be opting to remain on the Parkhead concourse rather than standing at their section.

Celtic fans were hit with fierce criticism last year after fans disrupted the Remembrance Day silence at their clash with Dundee.

Commentator Andy Walker described boos and chants as ’embarrassing’ while colleague Ian Crocker added: “Sadly some people just couldn’t manage it (staying silent for the minute).”

The Bhoys said they couldn’t support anything “which amounts to implicit or explicit support for the British military system” and urged other fans to do likewise.

They said: “The club have confirmed their plans to hold a minute silence to mark ‘Remembrance Day’ before the match against Ross County this afternoon.

“While much political debate around the concept of Remembrance Day can be had, our position is clear – we cannot and will not support anything which amounts to implicit or explicit support for the British military system.

“We, like many others, feel that the past two decades have seen a clear shift away from remembering those who died in the world wars, to a show of support for the British armed forces, and commemorations of all wars, including their imperialist actions in Ireland and across the globe.

“It is not our intention to disrupt the silence. Instead, we will remain in the concourse while it takes place.

“We should ask all fans who stand in our section behind our banner to join us in this, and we would invite all Celtic fans who feel the same way as we to do also remain in the concourse.”
