Ipswich star’s satisfied message to teammates as squad is forbidden from looking at table
Marcus Harness provided three assists in Wolves’ EFL Cup comeback on Tuesday and is determined to enjoy current success rather than focus on a promotion push.
However, manager Kieran McKenna has instructed his players not to peek at the Championship table until after Christmas. Despite finding his diminished role as an impact player off the bench “difficult,” Harness believes it is critical to focus on the present rather than the future.
“This is a special group, team, and club,” he remarked before of today’s trip to Huddersfield. “We’re just trying to enjoy it for as long as it lasts, which hopefully will be a long time.” We always back ourselves to make issues, and I think we can beat most of them.
That the 27-year-old isn’t throwing his toys away as he tries to restore his starting berth is also a credit to the mentality McKenna has instilled in him.
Harness was a notable performer after signing from Portsmouth in the early months of the season. However, he was sidelined in November due to a damaged meniscus, and he has battled to reintegrate into a club that has lost three times in all competitions this calendar year.
“I haven’t chipped in as much as I’d have liked,” he stated. “However, if I keep doing the right things, it will come.” The boys have been playing so well that it’s just up to me to keep the pressure on. Coming off the bench has been challenging at times.”
“The manager and his staff are always trying to find solutions,” Harness continued. I’m prepared to be called upon, and we’ve looked at a few positions. I believe I have been performing well in training, but everyone is. I’ve never been a part of a group that trains at such a high level, including those who aren’t playing.
“We have a large squad; many of us don’t play much, but there are no bad apples.” It’s an honor to be a part of this.
