Newcastle’s 20-year-old striker prefers to play in midfield rather than on the wing.
Elliot Anderson, a versatile Newcastle United academy graduate, has revealed the position he prefers to play.
Elliot Anderson has appeared on the team sheet frequently this season after impressing Eddie Howe from the moment he walked through the door.
Howe has utilized the 20-year-old midfielder in a variety of places, but he has noticeably settled into playing as part of the midfield three.
Anderson feels he’s playing in his best position for Newcastle
Anderson has now acknowledged that is his favorite role, but has also stated that he has a secondary post that he is more than willing to fill.
Anderson was asked where he thinks his best position is, and he said, “Probably where I’m at now, left number eight in the system.” I enjoy playing the left wing as well, so I’ll alternate between the two. I’ve always been a midfielder, so I like to play box-to-box.”
Elliot Anderson was recently called up to the Scotland senior squad, ostensibly ending concerns that he will defect to England, however the youngster did not feel at ease at the Scotland camp and withdrew. It remains to be seen which country he ultimately selects.
Anderson can learn from some of the best midfielders in the world
Anderson, who plays in Newcastle’s midfield alongside Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, has the opportunity to learn from two of the world’s best midfielders, which will only help him improve.
With Newcastle’s two primary strikers both carrying knocks and potentially facing fitness tests, Anderson might find himself out on the left wing against Burnley, with Anthony Gordon playing through the middle.
Both Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson were doubts heading into the weekend, but reports suggest that at least one, if not both, strikers will be fit enough to play, so it’s comforting to know Eddie Howe has choices.
