  •  Coventry City plans to be bold in the January transfer window to improve their struggling midfield situation.
  •  The club owner acknowledges the need for improvements and will target the right value for the situation.
  •  Although not as extensive as in the summer, Coventry is willing to invest in the right deals to turn their season around.

Doug King has hinted that Coventry City would be active in the January transfer window.

The Sky Blues are trying to replicate the form that earned them a play-off spot last season.

Mark Robins’ team is presently 16th in the Championship table, four points behind the top six.

While there are still plenty of games left to turn things around, Coventry has had a difficult season.

The January transfer window may provide the club with an opportunity to strengthen Robins’ first team roster, particularly in midfield, where there have been a number of concerns.

What are Coventry City’s January transfer plans?

Speaking at a BBC CWR fans’ forum, King has claimed that the Sky Blues will be aiming to make moves in the winter window at the turn of the year, although not to the same extent as last summer.

The Coventry owner admitted that the midfield situation is far from ideal, and that the club will look to make improvements when the right opportunity arises.

“January is obviously shorter than the summer window,” said King, via Coventry Live.

“Listen, everyone has speculated about what we paid and what we sold.

“We invested pretty heavily in the summer.

“Obviously I am aware and we are aware of the midfield situation and we’re working.

“If we find the right kind of deal that works for us with the right type of player then we’ll probably be bold and probably get involved.

“But for me, it’s never clear until it’s clear.

“And so you just have to keep going and do your work and if something turns up which you think is the right value for the situation then that will be where we’ll target.

“But it certainly will not be like the summer.”

Where are Coventry City in the Championship table?

Championship Table (As it stands w/c October 23rd)
Team P GD Pts
9 West Brom 12 4 17
10 Norwich City 12 1 17
11 Cardiff City 12 1 17
12 Hull City 12 1 17
13 Middlesbrough 12 0 17
14 Millwall 12 -2 16
15 Blackburn Rovers 12 -3 16
16 Coventry City 12 3 15

Coventry earned an impressive fifth place finish in the table last year, but are struggling to maintain that level of form into this campaign.

A play-off final defeat to Luton Town prevented the club from making a long-awaited return to the top flight.

Should Coventry City invest in January?

The January window often proves quite difficult to find the same value as in the summer, with clubs reluctant to sell midway through the campaign.

However, there are still decent deals to be had, therefore Coventry will be looking at any potential upgrades that can be made for Robins’ team.

They are still reeling from the defeat of the play-off final, but they still have a chance to contend for promotion this season.

Given their present gap to the top sides in the division, investing in January could be just what Robins’ side needs to turn things around.
