Cy Walsh back in full detention after apparent mental health decline
After an apparent decline in his state, the man who stabbed his own father to death while suffering from a severe mental health illness will be locked up in full custody.
In July 2015, Cy Walsh, 34, murdered his father, former Adelaide Crows coach Phil Walsh.
The courts judged Cy to be mentally incompetent at the time of the horrifying attack, with undiagnosed schizophrenia, and the state has since detained Mr Walsh in a secure psychiatric facility.
He was granted permission to leave the facility for unsupervised day outings into Adelaide in 2021, but that provision was removed on Wednesday by Justice Anne Bampton due to concerns about Cy’s mental health.
She set a review period of six months to assess Cy’s mental state, with a hearing booked for April 9, 2024.
Lawyer Trish Johnson, appearing for Cy, did not object to the order but noted there was no suggestion her client had offended or breached any conditions of the provision.
“I would be seeking leave for Your Honour to allow us to contact chambers and seek an early listing should his mental health stabilise earlier than six months,” she said.
The Crown did not object to Ms Johnson’s request.
Phil Walsh was 55 years old at the time of his death.
Cy resides at the secure James Nash House facility located in Adelaide’s north.

In a trade with the Crows, Melbourne has officially acquired off-contract Adelaide forward Shane McAdam.
McAdam made his intentions apparent prior to the start of the trade market this year, openly demanding an Adelaide departure in favor of the Demons this off-season.
Melbourne made a trade offer to Adelaide for the wanted Crow, one of their two future second-round draft picks, on Tuesday.
The prospective second-rounder on the table will be one of two available to the Demons following the sale of ruckman Brodie Grundy to the Sydney Swans.
The two parties reached an agreement on Tuesday morning.
While the Dees worked to facilitate McAdam’s arrival, the Crows had been intrigued by the prospect of luring South Australian Demon Harrison Petty to West Lakes this off-season, potentially as part of a deal that sent McAdam to Melbourne.
However, the Dees were firm in their wish to keep Petty, despite the fact that he is now under contract with Melbourne.
In other Demons player movement news, in addition to Grundy, Melbourne said goodbye to out-of-favour midfielder James Harmes last week in exchange for a future third-round pick. The team also lost free agent James Jordon to Sydney.
Last Friday, Melbourne acquired Brisbane giant Tom Fullarton in exchange for Pick 47.
