Red Sox Injury Updates: Nathan Eovaldi, Trevor Story, Kutter Crawford, Eric Hosmer

The Boston Red Sox’s injury-plagued season has been difficult all year, but it appears that some key players may return before the season’s finish.

Right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (shoulder inflammation), second baseman Trevor Story (ankle), right-hander Kutter Crawford (shoulder impingement), and first baseman Eric Hosmer (lower back) are among Boston’s injured players.

Fortunately, all four players have received positive updates with three weeks to go.

“Eovaldi on track for another live bullpen on Sunday,” tweeted Chris Cotillo of MassLive on Tuesday. “He may still get a rehab outing, but the Sox will not rush him.” The story will most likely return on Friday (after today’s baseball events).

“Crawford is making slow progress.” I won’t be returning in (the) next week. Hosmer is doing well.”

While Crawford’s update appeared to be negative based on the framing of the report, he began playing catch and is progressing in the right direction.

The 2022 season is coming to an end, but Eovaldi and Story could return, and Crawford could make an appearance before the season ends.

The Boston Red Sox have gone back in time to locate their next director of baseball operations. The organization made it official on Wednesday by introducing former Red Sox pitcher Craig Breslow as their new Chief Baseball Officer. The 43-year-old returns to Boston after working his way up the front office ranks with the Chicago Cubs for the previous four seasons.

Breslow was most recently Vice President of Pitching and Assistant General Manager for the Cubs, reporting to Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer.

Breslow will take over the Red Sox front office from Chaim Bloom, who was fired in September following two consecutive last-place finishes.

The Yale graduate brings plenty of familiarity with the organization, having pitched for the Red Sox from 2006-2009 and again from 2013-2015. Breslow was a key member of Boston’s 2013 World Series championship team, posting a 1.81 ERA in 61 appearances out of the bullpen that season.

After retiring as a player following the 2017 season, Breslow joined the Cubs in 2019 as their Director of Strategic Initiatives. He quickly moved up to become the team’s Director of Pitching in 2020 and was promoted to Assistant GM in February 2023.

Breslow received high praise for his contributions to the Cubs’ pitching infrastructure and development program. The Red Sox are hoping he can do the same for their ailing pitching staff, which finished 22nd in MLB in ERA last season.

Breslow knocked out Minnesota Twins GM Thad Levine, former Pittsburgh Pirates GM Neal Huntington, and internal contenders Eddie Romero and Brian O’Halloran for the job.

Breslow is returning to Boston, where he had his most success as a player. Now he’ll try to replicate his success as a member of the front office.
