Cade McNamara, a former Michigan quarterback, is out for the season after tearing his ACL against Michigan State.
McNamara transferred to Iowa this offseason
IOWA CITY, IA — Cade McNamara, a former Michigan football quarterback, will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his ACL against Michigan State over the weekend.
NcNamara took over as Michigan’s starter in the middle of a disastrous 2020 season and helped lead the club to a Big Ten title in 2021. Under McNamara’s leadership, Michigan defeated Ohio State for the first time in a decade and advanced to the College Football Playoff.
McNamara transferred to Iowa with three years of eligibility remaining after losing the starter spot to J.J. McCarthy in 2022.
Even with an experienced Big Ten quarterback at the helm, Iowa’s notoriously bad offense didn’t fare any better. In the first four games, the Hawkeyes averaged 21.25 points.
McNamara got hurt on Iowa’s second drive of the game, with his team leading 3-0. He was seen on the sideline with crutches as Deacon Hill took over at quarterback. A punt return touchdown and a bunch of field goals ultimately lifted the Hawkeyes over the Spartans.
Head coach Kirk Ferentz stated on Tuesday that McNamara tore the ACL in his left knee and will miss the remainder of the 2023 season. He finished the season with 505 yards passing, four touchdowns, and three interceptions while completing 51.1% of his attempts for an average of 5.6 yards.
McNamara has suffered his second significant knee injury, having missed the whole 2022 Big Ten season at Michigan.
McNamara, according to Ferentz, should be able to return for the start of Iowa’s 2024 season.
