Ohio State coach Ryan Day announced Tuesday that running back Miyan Williams will miss the rest of the season after a procedure on his knee. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Williams rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns in six games this season while behind both TreVeyon Henderson and Chip Trayanum on the depth chart. He led the team in rushing in the win against Penn State.
  • Last year, with Henderson limited, Williams led the Buckeyes with 825 yards and 14 TDs for the season.
  • The 5-foot-9, 226-pound Williams is in his fourth season but eligible to return in 2024.

  • Injuries at running back aren’t new for the Buckeyes. Last year, Ohio State used every scholarship back that it had and even then had to move Trayanum from linebacker to running back because of injuries to Williams and Henderson.

Ohio State football running back will miss rest of season

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football will be without a piece of its deep running back room for the rest of this season.

Miyan Williams underwent a procedure, per coach Ryan Day, and will not play again this season. Williams played his biggest workload two weeks ago against Penn State but did not make the trip to Wisconsin last week.

“Miyan has done a lot of great things for us,” Day said. “It’s a big hit for our team and that room.”

Williams was OSU’s leading rusher last season, but has operated solely in a backup role behind TreVeyon Henderson and Chip Trayanum this season. He rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 3.2 yards per carry.

Day said there is no decision yet on Williams possibly using another year of eligibility at OSU. The fourth-year player only played in four games as a true freshman in 2020, so he could return to play in 2024.

For the rest of this season, Williams’ absence presumably bumps Dallan Hayden up to No. 3 back status. However, OSU may try to avoid using him because it has also talked about trying to keep him under that redshirt threshold.
