Swansea City player ratings as star outstanding but duo struggle to maintain tricky Sunderland wingers

Here is how the Swans rated against the Black Cats at the Swansea.com Stadium

Here is how the Swansea City players rated after the clash with Sunderland.

Carl Rushworth 8 – STAR MAN

Made a number of outstanding saves, including big chances for Jack Clarke and Patrick Roberts in the first half. Stopped a Luke O’Nien effort from point-blank range after the break, too. Was outstanding.

Harrison Ashby 5

Had a really tough task trying to keep the dangerous Clarke at bay, but the Sunderland man got the better of him a little too often.

Harry Darling 7

Won Swansea the penalty and didn’t do a great deal wrong. Made a good block to stop a dangerous Dan Neil shot early on and decent in the air.

Bashir Humphreys 7

Looked cool and composed on the ball, as ever, although once or twice his man just wriggled away from him and into a dangerous area. Also great in the air late on.

Josh Tymon 5

Similarly to Ashby, had a difficult afternoon against Roberts, who chopped inside and out with far too much ease.

Matt Grimes 6

The midfield was a big mismatch and Sunderland played through it too easily at times. Tidy enough on the ball as you would expect.

Charlie Patino 5

One reckless tackle, one very debatable one which could have gone either way. Sent off after only 30 minutes, leaving the Swans with a massive uphill task thereafter.

Liam Cullen 5

Actually had an OK first half, in the circumstances, and was an outlet when Swansea were under pressure. Fell victim to a tactical change at half time, though.

Jamie Paterson 6

He flourishes when Swansea have control of a game but just couldn’t impart his quality. Got through a lot of good defensive work after Patino’s red, though.

Jamal Lowe 5

Missed a crucial penalty when Swansea were really up against the ropes. But also fashioned himself a good chance in the second half, which saw Anthony Patterson forced into a good save.

Jerry Yates 5

Ploughed a lone furrow for a lot of the afternoon. Had no real chances and had to feed off scraps. A tough one for him.

Subs

Jay Fulton (Cullen 46) 7 – Booked early on for being deemed to be out of control in a tackle. Undoubtedly shored up the midfield after he came on, though.

Ollie Cooper (Yates 69) 5 – Brought on with a brief to run himself into the ground and make a nuisance of himself and did that. Put in a bad tackle on Trai Hume late on, though.

Ben Cabango (Paterson 77) 7 – Made a good block from point-blank range late on. Also made a few crucial headed interventions.
