The Boston Red Sox seemingly will be linked to every big-name pitcher this offseason.

Boston has plenty of money to spend and a real need to bolster the rotation. The Red Sox aren’t too far away from postseason contention. Boston was right in the mix for an American League Wild Card spot for much of the summer but fizzled out after the trade deadline.

The Red Sox had some success this year — despite winning just 78 games — and could’ve been a playoff team with improved pitching. Boston’s offense was very solid, but the rotation didn’t help the club much. Boston clearly knows this and likely will be active in looking to plug the hole on the roster.

One player who reportedly could be a fit for the Red Sox is Texas Rangers lefty Jordan Montgomery, according to WEEI’s Rob Bradford.

Jordan Montgomery, Rangers look to top Mariners in key clash

“Think (Aaron Nola), but without a qualifying offer attached,” Bradford said. “Three straight years the lefty has made at least 30 starts, with the 2023 campaign witnessing the 30-year-old making 32 regular season starts, 21 of them going at least six innings. Also like Nola, he was no stranger to facing hitters the third time through the order, going up against 200 of them (totaling a .713 OPS).”

Montgomery has been extremely efficient over the last few seasons. He compiled a 3.83 ERA in 30 starts in 2021, a 3.48 ERA in 32 starts in 2022, and a 3.20 ERA in 32 starts in 2023. The big lefty was most impressive this season after the trade deadline when he was sent from the St. Louis Cardinals to the Rangers. He made 11 regular season starts with Texas down the stretch and had a 2.79 ERA. Plus, he was impressive for the Rangers throughout their World Series run.

If the Red Sox could land Montgomery as their No. 2 starter while landing someone like Orix Buffaloes star Yoshinobu Yamamoto as their No. 1 ace, that would be a fantastic offseason. Boston has money to spend and realistically could accomplish this lofty goal.
