Cleveland Browns Announce Practice Squad Elevations Before Trip To Baltimore
The Browns announced two practice squad elevations for positions of need ahead of their AFC North showdown with the Ravens on Sunday.
Ahead of Sunday’s AFC North showdown in Baltimore, the Browns have elevated two practice squad members to the roster for the game.
With Greg Newsome dealing with an injury, and his status of playing remains to be seen, and down Cameron Mitchell to the injured reserve, the Browns elevated veteran cornerback A.J. Green. His inside and outside experience in Cleveland will serve well for depth.
He is in his third NFL season with the Browns out of Oklahoma State. He has appeared in 31 career games with two starts. Green will continue to wear the usual No. 38 he has worn since joining the team in 2021.
With injuries to the receiving group, the Browns also elevated Austin Watkins off the practice squad. Watkins is a bigger body at 6-3 and 210 pounds and will serve as depth on the outside. This is his first NFL season as he was an undrafted free agent back in 2021. He will wear No. 80 on Sunday just as he did during a stellar preseason.
Both Green and Watkins have been with the Browns practice squad throughout the season so their experience in the system should be seamless.
It Might be a Cliche, but It’s All About ‘Going 1-0’ as Browns Have a Great Opportunity in Front of Them
The Cleveland Browns have a chance to put themselves back in the division race with a win over the Baltimore Ravens.
BEREA, Ohio — Each and every week, from Cleveland Browns coach Kevin Stefanski down to the players on the roster, the popular quote is ‘to go 1-0 this week’. No matter how big a game might be down the road, the mantra is echoed by the players and the coaches.
However, for this week, there is no better focus to have.
Since the Browns returned to the NFL, the team has not had too many important regular season games. Let’s face it, the Browns have not been very good since 1999.
However, this week’s AFC North showdown with the Ravens is a big game, for a lot of reasons, and it might be the biggest regular season game since 1999.
The Ravens are 7-2 and 2-1 in the AFC North. The Browns trail the Ravens by 1.5 games, overall, but the Ravens are 2-0 in the division, while the Browns are 1-2. A loss would knock the Browns to 2.5 games behind the Ravens and put them 1-3 in the AFC North, while Baltimore would be 3-0. Getting swept by the Ravens would all but put the AFC North out of reach.
But a win would vault the Browns to just a half a game behind the Ravens, but bring them even at 2-2 in the AFC North standings.
More importantly, a win over the Ravens could serve as a launching pad to vault the Browns into the second half of the season, starting with a return game with the Steelers next Sunday at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
Quarterback Deshaun Watson was asked about the big game with the Ravens this week and the extra meaning it has.
“Another game to go 1-0,” Watson said. “And that’s the vision we have, is focus on Baltimore and that’s it. We’re not worried about the outside noise or who’s the best team in the league and things like that. It’s the NFL. Everybody’s good and anybody can get beat on any given day. So, our main focus is executing and mastering this game plan. And then once Sunday comes, we got to go out there and play.”
Nothing could be more true.
Watson also has a chance to put his sub-par and injury-plagued play behind him, since joining the Browns and whether he will regain the Pro Bowl form the Browns gave up three first-round draft picks and $230 million guaranteed to acquire him.
This is a chance for Watson to start paying returns on the Browns’ investment in him and a chance for him to show that he is indeed an elite quarterback in the NFL.
The Browns should go ‘all in’ and pull out all the stops to do whatever they need to do to come out of Baltimore with a win.
On the other hand, what if they lose to the Ravens?
All is not lost as the Browns still have a path to the playoffs as a Wild Card team. The Browns have five wins and would likely need to find five more wins in the remaining eight games. Currently, five of the remaining eight games are against teams with non-winning records, including three teams with losing records and two teams with .500 records.
Only one team to win 10 games has not made the playoffs since the NFL expanded the number of playoff teams. No team has not made the playoffs with 11 wins.
The surest way to the playoffs is by winning the AFC North. That also gives the team a home playoff game.
The Browns can put themselves back in the midst of the division race by going 1-0 this week.
And that should be the complete focus.
