Ole Miss Football: Lane Kiffin ‘working hard’ to sign WR

Ole Miss Football: Rebels offer North Texas WR Ja’Mori Maclin

Lane Kiffin is always on the lookout for talented wide receivers from the transfer portal. Could the next one be North Texas transfer Ja’Mori Maclin?

Ole Miss will be looking closely at the wide receivers hitting the transfer portal through December. We still don’t know if Tre Harris, Jordan Watkins or Dayton Wade will be staying for one more season. However, Zakhari Franklin looks like he won’t be with the team next season.

Ole Miss Football: Rebels offer North Texas WR Ja'Mori Maclin

Harris, Watkins and Wade all had over 700 receiving yards this season and could be back. However, it won’t stop Lane Kiffin from looking to strengthen the receiver room.

Kiffin has already sent his first offer to a wide receiver in Ja’Mori Maclin. The North Texas transfer has also received offers from 11 other teams, including LSU, Texas A&M and Colorado.

Ja’Mori Maclin, a 2020 recruit, transferred to the Green Machine from Missouri at the end of the 2021 season. In his first season with North Texas, Maclin had 16 catches for 380 yards and two TDs. In his second season, his production soared, with 57 catches for 1,004 yards and 11 TDs.

The 5-foot-11 receiver led the team in receiving yards and touchdowns this season.

Maclin still has two years of eligibility left, with him redshirting the first season in Missouri and then failing to make the field in his second season due to injury.

Kiffin has some stiff competition for the signing of Ja’Mori Maclin. However, his history with wide receivers from the transfer portal looks good on paper.

Tre Harris was a transfer from a Group of Five conference team and led the team in receiving yards despite missing three games.

There will be plenty more receivers will be looking at, but Ja’Mori Maclin would be a great addition to the roster.

Rebels’ John David Baker to Become New Offensive Coordinator at East Carolina

Ole Miss co-offensive coordinator John David Baker set to join East Carolina as offensive coordinator - The Rebel Walk

OXFORD — Ole Miss Rebels co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach John David Baker has agreed to become the new offensive coordinator with the East Carolina Pirates, 247Sports reported on Friday. Baker just finished his third season on staff at Ole Miss under Lane Kiffin, and he has served as co-OC for the past two seasons. He was named passing game coordinator when he first arrived in 2021. He was a part of some of the strongest offenses in college football during his time in Oxford, including this season where Ole Miss ranked No. 16 nationally in total offense with 455.4 YPG. In his first season in 2021, the Rebels led the SEC in total offense (492.5 YPG) with quarterback Matt Corral at the helm.

According to the initial report, Baker was selected over other finalists Chad Morris (former Arkansas head coach and current offensive analyst at Clemson) and Keenan Bailey (tight ends coach at Ohio State). Baker has had multiple stops in his career prior to arriving at Ole Miss. He began his career as a graduate assistant at Abilene Christian before moving to a quality control role at North Texas. He then moved into the same role with the USC Trojans before becoming their tight ends coach in the COVID-impacted 2020 season. He appears to have his work cut out for him at East Carolina where the Pirates finished the season with the No. 127 total offense in the country and a 2-10 final record. The Rebels, sans Baker, are awaiting their bowl game destination after their second 10-2 season in the last three years. That destination will be announced on Sunday following the conclusion of conference championship games on Saturday.
