Report: Florida State Believed To Be In Contact With Former Five-Star Quarterback, UCLA Transfer - Sports Illustrated Florida State Seminoles News, Analysis and More

The latest NCAA Transfer Portal window has gotten off to a furious start with hundreds of players announcing their intentions on the first official day to do so. Florida State is expected to be more selective in this cycle than in years past but it’s starting to become obvious as things unfold that the program is interested in pursuing a quarterback if the right fit is available.

On Monday, UCLA true freshman quarterback and former five-star prospect Dante Moore officially entered the portal. According to 247Sports’s Allen Trieu, the Seminoles are one of four teams – FSU, Oregon, Michigan, and Miami – that are believed to be showing an early interest in one of the top transfers to hit the market so far.

Moore is coming off his first season with the Bruins where he completed 114/213 passes for 1,610 yards with 11 touchdowns to nine interceptions. He passed for 200+ yards four times in the year, including tying a career-high 290 yards in wins over San Diego State and Washington State.

Florida State’s coaching staff was involved with Moore during his high school recruitment. He was offered by the Seminoles in June of 2021 following an unofficial visit and returned for a Junior Day in March 2022. At the time, his visit caused controversy with ex-quarterback commit Chris Parson. Moore finished as the No. 4 overall prospect and No. 3 quarterback in the 2023 class.

The question is does Moore fit the future of Florida State’s quarterback room? It’s not an easy answer as it would be perceived that the coaching staff is searching for a one-year transfer to bridge the gap between true freshman Brock Glenn and incoming five-star prospect Luke Kromenhoek competing for the starting job in 2025.

At the same time, the Seminoles may need a fourth scholarship quarterback and the addition of Moore doesn’t guarantee him playing time. In theory, he would still have to beat out a redshirt senior Tate Rodemaker for the right to lead the Seminoles. As for Moore, he would be joining a staff that includes head coach Mike Norvell, quarterbacks coach Tony Tokarz, and offensive coordinator Alex Atkins. All three were crucial in Jordan Travis’s development into a Heisman contender and ACC Player of the Year.

Oregon, Michigan, and Miami were the other three teams reported to be in the mix. Moore was formerly pledged to the Ducks before flipping to the Ducks, he’s from the state of Michigan and heavily considered the Wolverines, plus, the Hurricanes are searching for a new starting quarterback after Tyler Van Dyke entered the portal.

Outside of Moore, some intriguing quarterbacks have decided to transfer such as Oregon State’s DJ Uiagalelei, Washington State’s Cam Ward, Oklahoma’s Dillon Gabriel, and Duke’s Riley Leonard.

The Seminoles have already had multiple players share their declarations to move on. The list of departures includes quarterback AJ Duffy, running back CJ Campbell, tight end Markeston Douglas, tight end Preston Daniel, and linebacker Dylan Brown-Turner.
