Sad Georgia Fans Were So Sad As Alabama Wide Receiver Trolled Student Section After SEC Title Win
Did the Georgia Bulldogs Cost the Florida State Seminoles a Playoff Spot?
Yesterday, the college football world eagerly anticipated the reveal of what four teams would make the College Football Playoff. Things started as expected with the Michigan Wolverines and Washington Huskies taking the top two spots. Then, things got interesting with the Georgia Bulldogs and Florida State Seminoles’ controversy.
Alabama Crimson Tide Got In
The big debate after Saturday night was what two teams were going to get the last two playoff spots. This was especially the case because the Alabama Crimson Tide defeated the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Championship. The result of that game made no college football fan envy Boo Corrigan and the rest of the CFP Committee.
If you go back to the non-conference schedule, you will remember that one of the biggest games of the season took place during this stretch. That was a game between the Texas Longhorns and Alabama Crimson Tide. It resulted in Texas definitively beating Alabama on the road.
On top of this, Texas only had one loss their entire season. That came during the Red River Rivalry on a neutral field against the Oklahoma Sooners. Oklahoma finished the season with just two losses and Texas only lost that game by four points.
Because Texas beat Alabama during the regular season and ended up having a great year, this put the CFP Committee in a very difficult position. It essentially meant that they could not select Alabama over Texas for the playoffs. The Longhorns had the “trump card” over the Crimson Tide. As a result, both of these teams got in and left Georgia and Florida State out.
Georgia Bulldogs and Florida State Seminoles
This leads us to the Georgia Bulldogs and the Florida State Seminoles. Because Texas and Alabama played each other this season, it forced Georgia and Florida State to be connected in this scenario. Why is that?
Truthfully, it is because Georgia would have opened the door for Florida State. Let’s say that Georgia would have won the SEC Championship and Florida State still won the ACC Championship. In this situation, we would have had four undefeated conference champions from Power 5 conferences.
As a result, Georgia would have 100% been in the CFP and Alabama would have been eliminated from the discussion. Then, Michigan and Washington would have gotten the next two spots. That leaves us with Florida State and Texas battling for the last spot in this scenario.
The argument here is that because there would have been four undefeated conference champions, it would have been easier to give Florida State the nod. They would have quality wins over teams such as the LSU Tigers, Clemson Tigers, and Louisville Cardinals. Plus, Texas’ key win over Alabama early in the season would not have been as strong.
In the end, it leaves us with a real argument that Georgia and Florida State were more connected than we realized given how things ended up playing out. Fans of both teams may spend a lot of time thinking back on what could have happened this season. For now, both teams can show us what could have been in the Orange Bowl coming up on December 30th.
