Highly-touted quarterback Arch Manning may have to wait another year for a chance to start if he stays at Texas for the 2024 season. That has led some to speculate that a transfer may be in his future, but that may not be the case after all.

247 Sports reporter Chris Hummer revealed Monday that the belief is that Manning is happy at Texas and unlikely to leave, even if Quinn Ewers decides to return for one more year.

“Obviously, Arch Manning is the name that looms above it all — everybody’s interested in Arch,” Hummer said, via Cody Nagel of 247 Sports. “Based on everything we’ve heard, Arch is perfectly happy at Texas. I think the expectation is he will be back in 2024.”

Hummer added that Maalik Murphy, who served as Ewers’ primary backup in 2023, would be far more likely to enter the portal if Ewers returns than Manning would be. Murphy, who will be a redshirt sophomore next year, may not be willing to back up Ewers for one more year, then have to compete with Manning for the starting job in 2025.

Recent reports have suggested that Ewers is likely to return to Texas for one more year, though that report came before the Longhorns made the College Football Playoff. Either way, it sounds like Manning and his four remaining years of eligibility will be back with the Longhorns in 2024, even if not as a starter.
