BREAKING: Texas Longhorns Promising Young Freshman QB Surprisingly Enters Transfer Portal After Limited Use

David Murphy is retiring - Lone Star Ball

A Texas Longhorns quarterback made the surprising decision to enter the transfer portal with a few weeks remaining before the team’s appearance in the College Football Playoff. Texas has an embarrassment of riches in the quarterback room.

Quinn Ewers is expected to stay with Texas for the 2024 season instead of entering the draft. Arch Manning seems to want to stay in Austin. But Maalik Murphy is reportedly set to enter the transfer portal.

Murphy will transfer from the Texas Longhorns

According to Pete Thamel with ESPN, Murphy is entering the transfer portal and will not be with Texas for the playoffs. Murphy said the timing of his decision to enter the portal was for his future and had nothing to do with the Longhorns’ program:

“It’s nothing against Texas at all. I’m doing this purely for me and my future. In my eyes, I’ll always be a Longhorn and a part of this great team.”

David Murphy: Loss of Hamilton, Young, Napoli added pressure to final Texas Rangers season

Entering the portal now will allow Murphy to position himself better for his next school before other quarterbacks transfer into programs first. However, giving up a chance to play in the CFP has to be hard on the 19-year-old athlete.

Murphy was a large reason Texas made the playoff. The redshirt freshman played in seven games for Texas and started in two games when Quinn Ewers battled a shoulder injury. Murphy threw for 477 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions this season.

Murphy was a highly touted recruit coming out of high school. He will receive plenty of interest from college football teams who need quarterback help.
