The Cleveland Browns have faced a plethora of challenges during the 2023 season, particularly grappling with injuries to key players. Despite the adversities, the team has demonstrated resilience, achieving an 8-5 record as they approach a critical Week 15 showdown with the Chicago Bears.

A significant contributing factor to the Browns’ success this season lies in their formidable defense, currently ranking 14th in points allowed. Notably, they top the charts in points surrendered, consistently posing a formidable challenge for their opponents.

However, the defensive unit is set to encounter added difficulties as they cope with the loss of a crucial player for the remainder of the season. Defensive tackle Maurice Hurst Jr. has unfortunately suffered a season-ending pectoral injury, marking a significant setback for the team.

Hurts made the announcement about his season-ending injury on Twitter.

“My 2023 season is over, and the frustration is unbearable. However I am grateful to my teammates, coaches, staff, and the city of Cleveland for welcoming me and making me a part of this family. I’ll be back better than before.”

Browns Could Consider Massive Defensive Free Agent Addition

Hurst’s absence creates a void in the Browns’ defensive line rotation, where he played a pivotal role, contributing 39 percent of the snaps. His impact is evident in his stat line, boasting 22 tackles, 1.5 sacks, four tackles for loss, one interception, and three passes defended.

Replacing such production could prove to be a daunting task. Despite his limited playing time, Hurst earned recognition as one of the highest-graded interior defensive linemen in the NFL, securing an impressive 81.0 overall grade, ranking 11th among qualified players at his position, according to PFF.

While the Browns still have solid defensive linemen in Shelby Harris, Dalvin Tomlinson, and Jordan Elliott, the loss of Hurst’s dynamic presence is tough. Exploring external options, former All-Pro Ndamukong Suh emerges as a viable target.

Suh, eyeing a comeback this season, has reached out to multiple teams. His recent stint with the Philadelphia Eagles showcased his enduring productivity, making him an interesting potential target for the Browns.

Bringing Suh on board could help fill the void in the Cleveland lineup, with the understanding that he may not be required to shoulder significant playing time. Instead, he could seamlessly slide into the rotational role previously occupied by Hurst, potentially delivering a comparable impact based on his impressive track record.

It will be interesting to see if the Browns explore the option of signing Suh. At this point in time, it would certainly make sense for both sides.
