Maalik Murphy officially emerges as backup to Quinn Ewers

Speculations is popping like static in the air after redshirt freshman quarterback Maalik Murphy entered the NCAA Transfer Portal; the former Texas Longhorns signal caller, who saw starting time during Quinn Ewers injury earlier this season, has three seasons of eligibility remaining. But what comes next for the former top-ranked 247Sports recruit?

“A place where I can play,” Murphy told reporters earlier this week, per 247Sports. “Continue to get better and continue to be around great people and great players. And just do what’s best for me and my career… I just want to be in a position where I can play. I don’t want to be waiting around and see what happens or anything like that. I’d rather kick-start my career while I can.”

The SEC used Monday Night Football to announce the dates of some important games for its newest members. Texas takes on Georgia on Oct. 19, 2024, in Austin, while Oklahoma faces Alabama on Nov. 23, 2024, in Norman.

The Longhorns’ full schedule will release at 6 p.m. CST on ESPN Wednesday, but the opponents have been announced. On top of the Bulldogs, Texas faces Michigan, Texas A&M, Florida and Kentucky, among others.

The only time Texas and Georgia have played each other this century was in the 2018 Sugar Bowl. Bevo the longhorn tried to attack Uga the bulldog, and then-Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger proclaimed Texas was back after beating the Bulldogs 28-21. The Longhorns are 4-1 all-time against Georgia.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart weren’t in the Crimson Tide’s coaching staff at the same time, but both had their last stop under Nick Saban. Smart served as the defensive coordinator from 2008-2015, and Sarkisian was Saban’s offensive coordinator for the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

The Longhorns play Washington in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1 for a chance at the national championship. Georgia plays Florida State in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 30.
