On an Early Signing Day during which 20 of the 21 Texas Longhorns signees sent in their National Letters of Intent over the course of about two hours, the day’s biggest drama is arguably reserved for the 6:30 p.m. Central decision from Jasper linebacker Tyanthony Smith between the Longhorns and the Texas A&M Aggies, who have held his commitment since late June.

The glaring remaining need in the 2024 class for head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff is at the linebacker position where the Longhorns have yet to secure a commitment.

After Jimbo Fisher was fired by the Aggies last month, the Longhorns worked to secure a visit from Smith with one reportedly scheduled for the regular-season finale against the Red Raiders. But that trip fell through and Texas had to keep recruiting the 6’1, 205-pounder in the hopes of flipping him from A&M.

And while co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Jeff Choate is taking over as the head coach at Nevada, the state of recruiting at the position didn’t changed much over the last month other than the staff offering Magnolia athlete Hunter Andrews, now a Utah signee who declined to visit the Forty Acres.
