Elite transfer edge Trey Moore signs with Texas over Alabama

How UTSA transfer edge Trey Moore fits at Texas - Burnt Orange Nation

The No. 3 Texas Longhorns are looking to reload quickly after their first trip to the College Football Playoffs, dipping into the NCAA transfer portal to add former UTSA Roadrunner Trey Moore to next year’s roster, landing Moore over the Alabama Crimson Tide and over 50 other schools that made contact with the AAC Defensive Player of the Year.

Texas announced Moore’s official addition to the class shortly after his commitment.

While the Longhorns don’t have a burning need at the edge position, adding a talent like Moore, a rising redshirt junior, is a no-brainer for Texas as they look to make the jump to the SEC in the 2024 season. Moore was an unranked recruit out of Spring Branch Smithson Valley, with offers from the Ivy Leagues and the Army Golden Knights, but chose to stay with the hometown Roadrunners as a part of the 2021 class. He was a likely candidate to transfer to a Power Five school after becoming a freshman All-American, but chose to stay in San Antonio for an additional season despite starting all 14 games and breaking Marcus Davenport’s school record with 18 tackles for loss among 59 total tackles, 30 solo stops, eight sacks, six pass breakups, five quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.

After his sophomore campaign netted the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year Award thanks to recording 45 total tackles, including 30 solo stops, 17.5 tackles for loss, and a school-record 14 sacks, along with three pass breakups, three quarterback hurries, one interception, one forced fumble, and a fumble recovery, Moore formally entered his name into the transfer portal.

In two seasons, Moore netted 140 total tackles, 35.5 tackles for loss, and 22 sacks, 14 of which came in 2023, which was good enough for No. 3 in the country, as well as 77 quarterback pressures and 47 quarterback hurries.

Texas already boasts a solid group of edge rushers, with the top two players on both sides currently slated to return for at least another year in rising senior Barryn Sorrell at Jack end and rising junior Ethan Burke at Buck end. With that being said, Texas hasn’t had a player record more than 5.5 sacks since Charles Omenihu in the 2018 season, so adding an elite rusher like Moore raises the ceiling for both that group and the defense overall.
