The recent additions of RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley suggest the Toronto Raptors are beginning to reshape their roster around Scottie Barnes leaving the soon-to-be 30-year-old Siakam potentially as the odd man out.

With five weeks to go before the trade deadline, early indications are the Raptors are going to see how the next few weeks play out before deciding on Siakam’s future.

“He’s got value around the league but he’s also going to be a free agent and I think if you’re Toronto if you’re not going to re-sign him, you can’t let him walk like Fred VanVleet walked,” ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said.

Siakam has a lot of leverage in the situation as he heads toward unrestricted free agency this summer. Teams are likely going to be reluctant to give up a lot for Siakam if they’re not convinced he’s going to re-sign in the offseason. His willingness to re-sign with whomever he’s traded to is going to dictate what the Raptors can receive in a deal, Wojnarowski said.

Toronto has so far been reluctant to sign Siakam to an extension and the former All-Star forward has suggested that he’d prefer to head into free agency this summer if he’s not inked to a new deal with the Raptors, per Marc Stein.

“Word is Siakam, if he’s dealt, is unlikely to sign off on a two-year extension and would prefer, again, to proceed to unrestricted free agency … meaning that any team that trades for him now must be daring enough to roll those dice,” Stein wrote.

Toronto has until Siakam’s free agency begins on June 30 to sign him to a contract extension this year. Once signed, he’ll be ineligible to be traded for six months.
