Five teams that should consider targeting Russell Wilson
Despite a late surge, it seemed pretty clear early on that the Denver Broncos wouldn’t be competing for a Super Bowl this season. But the fact that the team would not only pack it in with a chance to make the playoffs, but do so by benching a likely future Hall of Famer still came as a shock.
Once the Russell Wilson era is officially over in Denver, it won’t take long for other teams to inquire about adding the quarterback. So, who should go after him? Here are five possible contenders:
Atlanta Falcons
Are the Falcons ready to give up on Desmond Ridder? Ridder has only started 16 games in his short career, but that may be enough of a resume to prove that he’s not the longterm answer. Atlanta hasn’t been bad enough to garner a top pick in the draft, so the best college quarterbacks probably won’t be available come April, which could mean looking at a free agent like Wilson.
Minnesota Vikings
Until he tore his Achilles, Kirk Cousins was having a stellar year for the Vikings. While it’s possible that he could return and continue his great play, the issue is his contract, which expires at the end of the season. If Minnesota can’t – or doesn’t want to – match his demands, perhaps Wilson will be on their radar.
Pittsburgh Steelers
While the Steelers will finish the season with yet another winning record, it’s clear that the three-headed QB monster of Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph and Mitch Trubisky just isn’t sustainable. With a stout defense, run-focused offense and tenacious head coach, Wilson could thrive in Pittsburgh.
New England Patriots
Here’s where things really get interesting. With the Patriots having their worst season in decades, the team is going to have major decisions with its head coach and quarterback position. Neither Mac Jones nor Bailey Zappe have shown that they have what it takes to be the guy. Would New England be willing to pass on a potential franchise QB in the draft and take a risk on Wilson?
Washington Commanders
The Commanders find themselves in nearly the exact same position as the Patriots. While Sam Howell showed promise early on, the team seems like it could be ready to move on from him. Washington will also have a top pick in the draft. They will have to decide whether to take another quarterback or make a splash by going after Wilson.
