Alabama 2024 transfer portal, NFL draft tracker: What's next for Tide after Rose Bowl loss?

Alabama’s 2023 season is over.

Losing 27-20 in overtime to Michigan begins an offseason in which the Tide enters unfamiliar territory. For the first time in the Nick Saban era, Alabama has gone three consecutive seasons without winning a national title.

What’s next? From the transfer portal to NFL draft decisions and potential changes to the coaching staff, the first two weeks of January will shape a 2024 team that will compete within the new 16-team SEC and try to make the inaugural 12-team playoff.

Let’s start with the transfer portal. For undergraduate players across college football, the transfer portal closes Monday but teams playing in bowl games received a five-day window beyond their final game. That means undergraduate Alabama players will have through Saturday to go into the portal, while graduate players can enter at any time. A second undergraduate window will open April 16-30.

There is no question Alabama players will enter the portal this week after four players — quarterback Tyler Buchner, defensive linemen Isaiah Hastings and Anquin Barnes, and wide receiver Ja’Corey Brooks — entered in early December. The Tide has more than 90 projected scholarship players for next season and will need to cut its roster down to the NCAA’s 85-scholarship limit.

Next, the NFL draft. The NFL’s deadline for underclassmen with at least three years of college experience to enter the draft is Jan. 15, and there are four Alabama juniors with first-round projections. One of them, Dallas Turner, has already confirmed he will be leaving. Offensive tackle JC Latham and cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Kool-Aid McKinstry are the two other juniors to watch, although Alabama has several other eligible underclassmen who could but are highly unlikely to declare.

Then there’s the coaching staff. Barring a seismic decision from Nick Saban to step away, the only confirmed change so far will be outside linebackers coach/special teams coordinator Coleman Hutzler leaving to become Mississippi State’s defensive coordinator.

Here is a rundown of what is known so far about Alabama’s offseason changes:
