Should the Eagles hire Wink Martindale as defensive coordinator?
The former New York Giants DC is on the market and the Birds have a job opening.
As the Philadelphia Eagles prepare for their Wild Card matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night, fans have spent most of the past week wondering which, if any, coaches will be let go once the Birds lose in the playoffs. High on the list of coaches that many don’t want to see back next year are both sides of the two-headed defensive coordinator monster, Matt Patricia and Sean Desai.
Should the Eagles move in a new direction on defense, where might they look? Well, one place they might check out is just a touch north of them in New Jersey. The New York Giants recently parted ways with their defensive coordinator, Wink Martindale, who will now be looking for work. What better way to get back at your former team then by joining one of their division rivals, right?
Under Martindale, the Giants were one of the most blitz-happy teams in the league over the past two years (but still near the bottom of the league in sacks generated) and his scheme certainly seemed to give the Eagles and Jalen Hurts fits in the last game of the season. However, his defenses ranked 18th and 27th in terms of yards allowed and were somehow worse in yards per play allowed.
Since joining the NFL coaching ranks as the Oakland Raiders linebackers coach in 2004, Martindale has coached the Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens, and the aforementioned Giants, earning the role of defensive coordinator at his last three stops.
