Texas Longhorns could be favorite for decommitted four-star RB Rickey Stewart
Rickey Stewart was a big-time commitment for the SMU Mustangs. Unfortunately, despite the fact that he had been committed to SMU since June 11, the Mustangs weren’t able to hold onto him.
Stewart announced his decommitment from SMU on Wednesday, posting the announcement to social media.
“I am thankful for SMU offering me a chance to be a part of their program,” he wrote, “but I need to take more time to focus on making the best decision for my future, therefore I am opening up my commitment.”
By the numbers, that’s a pretty big loss for SMU. Not only is Stewart one of the better recruits from the talent-rich state of Texas, but the rankings consider him one of the best running backs in the country. According to the 247Sports composite board, he’s the No. 22 running back in the 2025 class.
With offers from the likes of Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan and Oregon, among others, it’s safe to assume that Stewart will become one of the hottest unpledged recruits in the 2025 trail. With that said, keep an eye on the Longhorns, who could quickly end up emerging as the favorite for his commitment.
Texas running backs coach Tashard Choice is his primary recruiter and Choice is very good in that role. He recently recruited five-star running back CJ Baxter to the Longhorns and he was credited as the coach who initially recruited current NFL star Jahmyr Gibbs to Georgia Tech.
Texas had also been recruiting Stewart pretty hard despite his commitment to SMU. The Longhorns offered him on Jan. 20 at a junior day event.
“It was really exciting being here today, a real experience I’ve never felt before,” Stewart had told On3 after that visit. “I was too happy when I got the offer. Coach Sark and Coach Choice, they are great coaches. Two coaches that I’m building a real bond with. I’m learning more than just football, but being a great person.”
Now with his decommitment from SMU, it sure seems like the Longhorns could be in the driver’s seat to land the talented running back.
Stewart rushed for 2,855 yards and 40 touchdowns with Chapel Hill High School (Tyler, Texas) in 2023.
