Report: Alabama football to promote Nick Sheridan to offensive coordinator

Nick Sheridan expected as next Alabama football offensive coordinator

Alabama football is reportedly looking in-house to fill its offensive coordinator vacancy.

Kalen DeBoer will elevate former tight ends coach Nick Sheridan after the departure of Ryan Grubb to the Seattle Seahawks. Sheridan has coached with DeBoer at Indiana, Washington and now with the Crimson Tide. Matt Zenitz of 247Sports broke the news of Sheridan’s promotion on Tuesday morning.

Sheridan is the son of former NFL defensive coordinator and current United Football League coach Bill Sheridan. The younger Sheridan started four games for Michigan in 2008 after making the team as a walk-on. Sheridan began his coaching career at Saline (Michigan) High before moving to Western Kentucky, South Florida and Tennessee.

Sheridan has served in a variety of roles from passing game coordinator to quarterbacks coach. He was last an offensive coordinator in 2020-21 with the Hoosiers, getting promoted under head coach Tom Allen after DeBoer accepted the Washington job.

Sheridan called plays for then-Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. to a 1,645-yard season as a passer in 2020. The offense struggled a year later, managing just 291.8 yards per game. Allen and Sheridan were among the coaches fired the following offseason.

Along with JaMarcus Shephard, general manager Courtney Morgan and assistant director of player personnel Jerret McElwain, Sheridan will follow their old boss into the Southeastern Conference. Grubb and offensive line coach Scott Huff were also expected to join, but Huff is accepting a job on Grubb’s NFL staff.

“Those that have gone with us from Washington, there’s certainly an understanding of the system. What certain concepts are called and how we teach them,” DeBoer told reporters at the Senior Bowl on Jan. 31.

DeBoer also said that coaches would start installing his system last week before news of Grubb’s departure broke. In addition to the coaches, Washington transfers Parker Brailsford (OL), Germie Bernard (wide receiver) and Austin Mack (quarterback) each have some familiarity with the game plan.

UA has yet to officially announce any hire aside from DeBoer. The defensive staff appears to be filled, led by former South Alabama head coach Kane Wommack. On the offensive side of the ball, DeBoer’s strength, there are openings at the offensive line and now tight end.

Alabama’s spring schedule has yet to be released. DeBoer’s first A-Day spring game will be on April 13 in Bryant-Denny Stadium.
