INJURIES: Wellens gives fitness update on Saints quartet
SAINTS coach Paul Wellens has given a fitness update on the trio that sat out Friday’s game against Leigh – as well as Curtis Sironen who came off with a back spasm.
Waqa Blake missed out last week with sickness, Matty Lees sat out after being hospitalised at the Huddersfield game with a lung injury and Joe Batchelor has yet to play after a pre-season collar bone injury.
With Konrad Hurrell suspended for one game, Blake is likely to return to take that spot for Friday’s game against Salford.
Wellens gave an positive update on the casualties.
He said: “Curtis Sironen has improved, he’s just taken part in training and is looking like he will be fit to play.
“We will have to assess him again in the morning to see if he has come through but we’re hopeful.
“Waqa Blake and Matty Lees are a lot better now, so obviously. So with Konrad Hurrell out Waqa comes back into contention.
“Waqa is fit and healthy and obviously raring to go.”
With Lees’ injury, Saints will ensure that front rower is fully recovered before being thrown back into the fray.
Wellens said: “We have to make a call on Matty, but we’re thinking it might need another week.
“We have got to respect the situation. He is someone who’s had a rough couple of months in terms of months in terms of infections and has been in hospital a few times.
“So we want to make sure that when Matty does come back he comes back fit and healthy and ready to not to just play one game but string a number games together.”
Batchelor, who has been sidelined since the friendly game against Salford, is still not ready to return – but he has made progress.
Wellens said: “Hopefully next week or the week after for Joe. He is making good progress, he has started to do a bit more light contact progressions now and on the physicality side of things.
“So if he continues to progress in the right way, we are hopeful that he will make the Leeds fixture – if not it should almost certainly be the week after.”
