Sad News: Padres top player will absent from upcoming games as he is set to undergo critical surgical operation
Go Woo-suk, first-year reliever for the San Diego Padres, has endured his worst outing of spring training.
Go was roughed up for five earned runs on four hits, including a home run, while retiring just one batter, as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Padres 5-4 at Tempe Diablo Stadium in Tempe, Arizona, on Sunday (local time).
Go relieved Logan Gillaspie to begin the bottom of the sixth inning with the Padres up 4-0, and the lead evaporated by the time he got the hook.
Go served up a leadoff triple to Mike Trout, and following a walk, Aaron Hicks cashed in two runs with a double to right.
Taylor Ward kept the beat going with a single that brought home Hicks. Then Brandon Drury delivered a go-ahead, two-run home run to right center field.
Go struck out Logan O’Hoppe to settle things down, only to have Zach Neto reach second base on an error by right fielder Tim Locastro.
Sean Reynolds replaced Go on the mound and struck out the next two batters to put out the fire. The Padres failed to rally, and Go was charged with his first loss of spring training.
Go’s ERA jumped to an ugly 16.20 after just 3 1/3 innings in four appearances this spring.
Go, a former All-Star closer for the LG Twins in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), signed a two-year deal with San Diego in January. He was expected to battle for the closer job with Robert Suarez and Yuki Matsui.
He is one of two South Korean players on the Padres, alongside shortstop Kim Ha-seong, who did not play in Sunday’s game.
Elsewhere in spring training, Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants recorded his first hit against a left-handed pitcher in an 8-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners.
Batting leadoff, the rookie center fielder went 1-for-3, the lone hit being a single off lefty reliever Tayler Saucedo in the fifth inning at Peoria Stadium in Peoria, Arizona.
Lee, who bats left and throws right, is batting .368 with an on-base plus slugging percentage of 1.008 in his first spring training.
