The Las Vegas Raiders boast the 13th pick in next month’s NFL Draft. There has been some talk about head coach Antonio Pierce and general manager Tom Telesco looking to trade up for a quarterback.
Vegas moved on from Jimmy Garoppolo after a failed one year experiment. The team signed Gardner Minshew as competition for youngster Aidan O’Connell. It’s still not a great situation under center in Las Vegas.
In talking about the upcoming NFL Draft and the quarterback position, Pierce threw a ton of praise in the direction of Michigan product J.J. McCarthy.
“J.J. McCarthy you’re talking about a National Champ, a winner. So I don’t know how he’s not in the top three, if you want to be honest,” Pierce told reporters.
While not necessarily a consensus, most believe that Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels are the top-three quarterbacks in what is a loaded class at this position.
Though, McCarthy has drawn recent buzz as a potential top-five pick in the coming draft. Teams love what he brings to the table as it relates to the mental aspect of playing quarterback.

Washington’s decision to trade Sam Howell to the Seattle Seahawks coupled with the Patriots’ trade of Mac Jones suggests both are going quarterback, too.
This leaves the Arizona Cardinals as a potential trade-up partner for Las Vegas. General manager Monti Ossenfort has made it clear that they are fielding offers for the fourth pick.
“There will be a big neon sign that says ‘open’ and I don’t like it blinking, it messes with my eyes, but we’re always going to be listening,” Ossenfort told reporters last week. “I think we’ll always have the conversation, we may not get to a point where a deal makes sense, whether it’s at [No.] 4 or anywhere we’re picking, but we’re always going to have the conversation and if it makes sense, if it’s attractive to building our team, then it’s something that we’ll certainly consider no matter where we’re at in the draft.”
Assuming the board plays out as expected, this could enable the Raiders to nab McCarthy in a trade-up scenario. At the very least, Pierce’s comments suggests that he’s really high on the national championship quarterback.
