Former Ipswich Town loanee Jeremy Sarmiento has been included in Ecuador’s squad for their upcoming Copa America campaign.

The tournament, which will be held in the same country, begins the following week. Felix Sanchez Bas’ side have been drawn in Group B alongside Venezuela, Jamaica and Mexico, where the top two teams will advance to the knockout stages.

This will be Ecuador’s 30th appearance at the Copa America, although they’ve never done better than a fourth-place finish. They were knocked out by eventual winners Argentina in the round of 16 back in 2021.

Sarmiento, who scored four goals in 22 appearances for Ipswich last season, currently has 15 caps to his name. He returned to his national team back in March after a year away and is set to represent them at a major tournament for the first time since the 2022 World Cup.

It remains to be seen whether he’ll return to Portman Road next season. However, when he joined on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion in January, Ecuadorian journalist María José Flores revealed that the Blues would have the option to extend his time in Suffolk by another 12 months if they were promoted to the Premier League.
