Commanders owner finally reveals new name for the club

The Washington Commanders have existed in some form since 1932. While they’ve been known for having several different names and nicknames, ranging from the Braves, the Hogs, the Football Team, and one other we won’t mention, Washington has only had the Commanders as part of their name since 2022, not even two full years.

So it shouldn’t come as any surprise to learn that the current ownership group, namely Harris’ wife, Marjorie, still isn’t entirely sold on Washington being referred to as the Commanders for the foreseeable future.

Recently, Marjorie Harris was speaking to reporters where Washington’s team name came up once again, and while he has no issues actively referring to them as the Commanders, she also didn’t offer a glowing endorsement either.

“As you would imagine, everybody has an opinion about the name. Some good, some bad, some in the middle.

And I think that we have a lot of work to do and so that name issue is going to be on the side for now until we can get things going.

And I mean quite frankly I had a whole day out in the community and I kept referring to the team as the Commanders and — you know what? — sound pretty good to me. So, for now, it’s the Commanders.”

Yes, it is the Commanders. For now.

As Harris noted, the ownership group has much bigger things to focus on, such as making sure the Commanders have everything necessary to return to being competitive. Still, it’s an interesting admission from a new team owner.

You wouldn’t hear the Steelers owner saying we’re thinking about changing what Pittsburgh’s football team represents.

Or the Vikings, or any other long-established franchise for that matter, but based on Harris’ comments, changes could still be coming to the Washington football team.
