Royal Antwerp manager Jonas De Roeck has labelled Denis Odoi red card as “unnecessary”, with the match official coming under the firing line over his decision to send off his guardsman during the clash.
The experienced Ghana international right-back received his marching orders on the 87 minutes after his first bookings on the 21 minutes.
However, the decision by the man in charge of the affairs on the field did not go down well with his manager as he saw his side succumb to a 0-1 defeat to Club Brugge at the end of the contest.
Jonas De Roeck, who jumped to the defence of his defender, was left fuming after the game: “That first card is too easy, I don’t think it’s necessary in these kinds of matches. With the second yellow card, it’s not necessary to bring that intensity, but I don’t judge him on that. And Odoi says he doesn’t touch the man. What’s wrong with that?”
“Denis brings intensity, not only in the games, but also in training.What’s wrong with intensity if it’s correct? Odoi is very intense in his actions, but he never does it with the wrong intention. His first yellow card is not correct, because Doumbia is wrongly stopped and we lose the ball.”
“In a top match you have to give cards at the right time. In such matches you should not throw cards around. Just keep it low-key and talk to the players.”
